Shimla, (PTI) The world's tallest idol of
Lord Hanuman was unveiled at the Jakhu temple, Simla in November 2010 by
Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal in the presence of film star Abhishek Bachchan,
his sister Shweta Bachchan Nanda and other members of Nanda Trust.
The 108-feet tall idol was installed at the highest peak of the town. As the
legned goes, Hanumanji had rested on Jakhu hill for a while here after taking "sanjivini
booti" from Deoronagiri and an ancient temple was already in existence for a
long time.
The statue, which weighs 1,500 tonnes and is
positioned at an elevation of 8,500 feet, is reported to be one of the tallest
in the world.
The Chief Minister and other dignitaries offered worship to Lord Hanuman and
recital of bhajans marked the occasion.
Dhumal thanked the Nanda Trust for installing the statue at the "most
appropriate" place and said it was a "unique gift" to devotees who throng this
place in large numbers throughout the year.
