Among the devout Hindus, Sivaratri, Sanskrit:
"Great Night of Siva", the most important sectarian festival of
the year for devotees of the Hindu god
Siva, which falls in the month of February,
is a very important day. It is a day especially for the womenfolk. The
14th day of the dark half of each lunar month is specially sacred to Siva,
but when it occurs in the month of Magha (January-February) and, to a
lesser extent, in the month of Phalguna (February-March), it is a day of
particular rejoicing. The preceding day the participant observes a fast and at
night a vigil during which a special worship of the linga (symbol of Siva)
is performed.
A complete fast, meditation,
prayers and offerings to Lord Siva mark the occasion. On this auspicious day is
celebrated throughout the length and breadth of Kerala. The river town of Aluva
plays host to the great Maha Sivarathri festival. Devotees gather on the
sand-banks of the river Periyar and they keep awake the whole night, fasting and
meditating. In the small hours of the morning, accompanied by full-throated
chants, they plunge into the river, and then emerge to offer prayers. The fair
which grows around this festival is popular with people of all persuasions. The
richly illuminated sand banks with its dream-like reflections in the river
waters present an enchanting sight.
