Nuclear science is the study of the atomic
world.
Everything is made of atoms. We
are entirely composed of them, as is everything that surrounds us. Learning
what atoms do and what happens when they combine is of critical importance.
It has a constant effect on our lives. If we know how atoms get together, or
can be best combined with others, new, more efficient materials and drugs
can be developed through 'molecular engineering' and 'rational drug design'
Nuclear Engineering
Nuclear engineering encompasses
all areas of the research, development, and application of nuclear energy.
Nuclear energy is a prime source of energy in the world, and its wise
utilization will produce many benefits. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear power does
not contribute to acid rain or greenhouse gases that produce global warming. The
application of nuclear energy requires engineers with a broad educational
background that covers specialized areas such as nuclear physics and radiation
science as well as general areas of engineering useful in any energy field.
Nuclear engineers are involved
in the design, construction, and operation of nuclear power plants for power
generation, propulsion of nuclear submarines, and space power systems. Nuclear
engineers are also involved in the handling of nuclear fuels, the safe disposal
of radioactive wastes, and in medical uses of radioactive isotopes. Major thrust
area of work is researching in nuclear energy and radiation. Specialization: It
offers specialization in nuclear weapons, developing radioactive material for
industrial and medical use etc.
Educational Attainment:
B.E., Graduate programs leading
to the degree of Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering, Master of Science and
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) are offered for qualified students seeking advanced
degrees.
Nuclear engineers research and
develop the processes, instruments and systems used to derive benefits from
nuclear energy and radiations. They design, develop, monitor, and operate
nuclear plants used to generate power.
Employment Opportunities
In Energy Engineering The
four-year undergraduate degree provides a well-grounded education that will lead
to opportunities in any field of energy engineering. Although one objective of
the nuclear engineering program is to help students develop in specialized
areas, the primary goal is to prepare them for a professional career. As a
result, students are encouraged to develop a broad background in engineering and
science and an awareness of social, economic, and environmental issues. Thus
equipped, they will be capable of continued professional growth in the
constantly changing technological world. Specifically, the nuclear engineers get
employment in nuclear power plant, Defence and nuclear installations, with
nuclear power manufacturers, with defence manufacturers etc.
