The way ahead is through GATE Engineering and technology graduates have higher study options spread across the country. A look at the qualifying requirements and the choice of colleges. By Gopakumar Karakonam : There are several higher studies options for B.E./B.Tech. degree holders in electrical or electrical and electronics engineering who have secured a valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score. As part of M.Tech. level options, they may consider various specialisations, namely, power electronics and drives, power systems, electrical machines, control and instrumentation, applied electronics, embedded systems, VLSI design, nanotechnology, nano medical sciences, remote sensing and geo-informatics system and so on. Many engineering colleges and institutions offer M.Tech. degree and almost all of these colleges admit students on the basis of the marks scored in GATE. Clearing the GATE exam makes one eligible for scholarships from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. In admission interviews to most institutions, 70 per cent weightage is given for the marks scored in the GATE exam and 30 per cent for academic merit. Top-level institutions admit only those B.Tech. graduates who have a high score in the GATE exam. In Tamil Nadu, a common admission test (TANCET) is conducted for admission to M.E./ M.Tech. programmes through a single-window system. Candidates from other States can also appear for the entrance test. The Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, offers M.Tech. in electronics with specialisation in digital electronics and microwave and radar electronics; opto-electronics and laser technology; and computer and information science. If sufficient number of GATE-qualified applicants is not available a department level test will be held for others. The DOEACC Centre, Kozhikode, conducts an M.Tech. course in embedded systems. Those with B.E./B.Tech. degree in electronics, electrical and instrumentation engineering are eligible. The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut, conducts M.Tech. in electrical engineering with specialisation in instrumentation and control systems and power electronics. Website: www.nitc.ac.in. NIT-Tiruchi offers a course in power systems for electrical or electrical and electronics engineering graduates. Website:www.nitt.edu. Amrita School of Engineering, Ettimadai, Coimbatore offers M.Tech in power electronics, embedded systems, remote sensing and wireless, sensor networks, computational engineering and networking. Candidates with B.Tech. degrees in electrical engineering are eligible. The Amrita School of Engineering in Coimbatore, Bangalore, and Amritapuri (Kollam) conducts M.Tech. courses in VLSI (Very Large System Integration) design. Those with B.E./B.Tech degrees with at least 60 per cent marks may apply. Selection is based on academic merit and interviews or group discussion. Applicants with GATE score will get preference. Those appearing for the final-year qualifying examinations may also apply. Website: www.amrita.edu At IITs, IISc. The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) at Chennai and Kharagpur offer M.Tech. in electrical engineering. The selection is based on GATE score. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore, offers the following programmes: M.E. degree in electrical engineering: The areas of study include power systems, power electronics and high voltage engineering. Those with at least a second class B.E. or B.Tech. degree in electrical or electrical and electronics engineering are eligible. Website: www.iisc.ernet.in/admissions M.E. degree in micro-electronics systems: Those with at least a second class B.E. or B.Tech. degree in electrical/electronics and communication/computer science and instrumentation engineering can apply. M.E. in signal processing and system science automation: At least a second class B.E. or B.Tech. degree in electronics and communication, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical or chemical engineering are eligible for admission. Selection is based on the GATE score. Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, offers M.E. in electronics engineering with specialisation in power electronics and drives, embedded systems, micro-electronics and communication engineering. Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi, offers M.E. in control systems as a specialisation. Website: ww.bitmsera.ac.in. Anna University, Coimbatore, conducts M.E. degree course in power systems, electrical machines, and power electronics and drives. Website: www.annauniv.ac.in. Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar, Tamil Nadu, offers M.E. in power systems. Those with B.E. or B.Tech. degree in electrical and electronics engineering are eligible for admission. Selection is based on an entrance test.
