DIRECTOR: Mike Newell,
CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina
THE plot follows Dastan (Gyllenhaal), a street
urchin in the Persian Empire in the sixth century. After showing valour in
battle, he is adopted by the king as his heir, so the king's two sons will not
fight over the throne. Later on, he teams up with Princess Tamina (Arterton) to
stop a common enemy - the villainous nobleman Nizam (Ben Kingsley) and to take
from him an ancient dagger known as "The Dagger of Time" (a valuable dagger
which gives to its owner the ability to go back in time for short periods and
change the past) and keep him from generating a sandstorm which could destroy
the world.
This epic is directed by veteran Mike Newell. If that's a name that's familiar
to you, then you shouldn't be surprised. Newell is the maker of classic hits
such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, the great "Donnie Brasco" and one of the
Harry Potter movies. The story is not much to write home about, but Newell's
film benefits from its cast, which also features great actors such as Kingsley
as a slimy uncle and Alfred Molina as an Ali Babatype robber - a lovable,
always-laughing crook you can't trust.
The characters and dialogue are surprisingly well-written, especially the part
of Tamina. The rather broadshouldered Atherton is more than just a pretty face;
she's far from the frail heroine movies like these usually are crammed with.
This is one no-nonsense princess. If she had a car, she'd have a bumper sticker
saying "I don't take any crap'
This is a gorgeous looking movie. Quite often the sun-drenched sceneries almost
glimmer like gold.
There are lots and lots of acrobatic, savage (but family friendly) action set
pieces, some comedy, an ostrich race which of course is very cool- and Jake
Gyllenhaal possesses the requisite charm as the hero. Actions scenes where
Dastas has to jump from crumbling pillar to unstable post, one is reminded of
the game. For that matter, the CGI work is so good and the narrative so
excellent that you are gripped to the edge of the seats till the end of the
film. If you've been a fan of the game, you just might find yourself going back
to see the film once again.
