CAST: Vijay, Tamanna Bhatia, Vadivelu
Vijay's 50th film is a much-looked forward to
one. Completely free of complications, a simple straight forward story Sura
presents Vijay in a role you've seen him before that of a savior - except for
the fact that his personality in the film is full of life and totally upbeat
which is something you haven't seen Vijay attempt before. Tamanna Bhatia does a
decent job in a role that doesn't require much from her. Here's how it goes.
Sura is a good hearted young man from a fishing village called Yaazh Nagar. He
is, in a nutshell, the darling of the village. He's always there with a helping
hand; if there's a wrong being done you can be sure he's there to fight for what
is right, and if someone's down he's there to cheer him up. Everyone loves his
child-like mischief, humour and large heart.
There is of course a love interest but he insists that he will only marry her
when all the problems that his little village is facing are solved. The way he
meets his love, played by Tamanna Bhatia, is when she attempts suicide after
losing her dog. As always, Vijay comes to the rescue and the romance begins. The
romance, incidentally, makes for some fantastic visuals as the songs are shot in
stunning locales.
Coming to the problem that the village is facing: a local minister, played by
Dev Gil, is trying to get the fisher folk to leave their village in order to use
the land more lucratively. It is this that forms the crux of Sura and along
which line the story unfolds. When Sura starts to fight with the minister and
his team is when things get heated because the minister doesn't take it quietly,
and in fact turns around to destroy him. How Sura escapes this devious scheming,
saves the entire village and also marries his lady love is how the movie pans
out rather predictably.
What the film has going for is the humour with Vadivelu and a totally new Vijay
in the sense that he's a truly effervescent presence in this whole film. His
action is the usual and his dialogues have the usual punch.
The dance numbers, however, are totally worth it.
