Muharram
is not a celebration but a mourning period observed by every Muslim. It
commemorates Karbala battle and the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain, grandson of
Prophet Muhammad. This battle of Karbala was fought against the tradition
of Islam and between two rival cities in Arabian Peninsula, which led to
the merciless death of Hazrat Imam Hussain.
People
mourn the tragedy which occurred decades ago on this day. Scenes from the
battle are enacted in Mosques and Islamic women remove all their jewels and
mourn. Processions are held by men where, they beat with chains on their
bare chest. People wear black clothes and attend prayers (Namaz) in Mosques.
