India's most reputed playback singer and the golden voice of Indipop, often
referred to as India's iconic singer, Sonu Nigam is a complete musician with
extraordinary talent and a voice to die for. He is a student of music, with zeal
to surpass his own targets and a performer par excellence. Today he is a
superstar, an icon to millions of music lovers across the globe — he is a
legend.
Nigam's diverse musical repertoire puts him in a distinctive position. He has
redefined the image of the Bollywood vocalist, both in the studio and on stage.
Sonu Nigam is a true performer and loves the stage. He has performed various
live shows all across the globe and in every continent. His shows are packed
with grandeur and entertainment which has won him accolades from fans all over.
Sonu Nigam was born on 30 July 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana, India. Nigam began
his singing career at the age of three, when he joined his father on stage
singing Mohammad Rafi songs and at the age of 19, he moved to Mumbai with his
father to begin his Bollywood singing career. Sonu Nigam comes from a merchant
family. Born to Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam, he attended the J.D. Tytler
School. He has two sisters, Meenal and Neekita. In the last few years his father
has released several hit albums including "Bewafaai" and "Phir Bewafaai" and,
more recently, "Bewafaai ka Aalam". Nigam also acted in movies and it started as
a child in films including 1983's Betaab. As an adult, he acted in films such as
Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani, Kash Aap Hamare Hote, as the male lead opposite
Juhi Babbar, and Love in Nepal
Nigam took up radio commercials until his big break came in a popular TV show Sa
Re Ga Ma after which there was no looking back. The format of the show gave
Nigam a chance to showcase his singing talent as well as his natural charm and
appeal towards audiences.
He shot to fame with composer Anu Malik's song Sandese Aate Hain from the 1997
war movie Border. The same year he sang Nadeem-Shravan composed chartbuster Yeh
Dil Deewana (Pardes). Since then, he has created a unique style of his own.
Over the years Sonu Nigam has become a major force in the Indian music industry.
He is recognised for his versatility in singing and his excellent range by
singing romantic, rock, and patriotic numbers. His recent acts as a composer and
mimicry artist have won him critical acclaims too. His projects like, Chote
Ustaad and X-Factor on Star Plus also received rave reviews from critics all
across the globe.
Some of his latest rendition in the Indian film industry includes Abhi Mujh Mein
Kahin from the superhit remake of Agneepath, Jaane Nahin Denge from 3 Idiots,
Jab Se Mere Dil Ko Uff from Teri Meri Kahaani and Allah Maaf Kare from Desi Boyz
to name a few.
Nigam also has a philanthropic and spiritual side to him as he has lent his
voice to various devotional and patriotic songs. He has also recorded albums
paying tribute to legends like Shammi Kapoor and Michael Jackson.
Sonu Nigam has to his credit a national award and numerous other awards for best
male playback singer category. He did not limit himself to Hindi songs — his
body of work includes songs in Kannada, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu,
English, Bhojpuri, Urdu, Nepali, Chhattisgarhi and Marathi.
Personal life: Sonu married Madhurima on
15 February 2002. They have a son, Nevaan, born in 2007. Nevaan is also very
interested in music and has recently recorded a song with Lata Mangeshkar.
Nigam has done work for various charities in India as well as abroad for Dignity
Foundation, various cancer organizations, leprosy organizations, blindness
organizations, women's welfare organizations, kargil war affected families,
earthquake affected families. He also sponsors a child from the organization
“Crayon”. He has made various appearances in the cause of HIV / AIDS and also
has a song titled "Papa I'm sorry" relating to this. He has also released
several songs and made several contributions to the cause of peace between India
and Pakistan.
