Civil engineering, a specialized branch of engineering, deals with a variety of construction and maintenance tasks for instance, building and maintaining roads, tunnels, bridges, buildings, dams, airports, water works, sewage systems, ports etc. Civil engineering surveying is a very important function that involve in every stage of a project from initial conception stage to design and construction, to monitor and evaluation of the quality and performance of the completed facility.
We can divide civil engineering surveying into two areas i.e. Quantity surveying or commercial management, Engineering surveying or geospatial engineering.
Commercial Management
In commercial management quantity surveying, we basically focus on the financial management of a civil engineering project. In this regard, the Quantity surveyors work with other professionals of the project for preparing the contract documents which projects are formulated, proper measuring of the work completed or progress on the site. The job profile of the commercial management is to prepare contract documents that includes legal documents. He also selects the various contractors and subcontractors by doing evaluation of bids or prices received. Moreover, he also prepares the detailed cost estimates of the construction project. As an engineer, an individual also takes advice from project managers and engineers on the financial issues.
Geospatial or Engineering Surveying
Geospatial or Engineering Surveying covers various tasks such as measurement and monitoring of projects, producing maps, plans and charts of various aspects of the project. This is an integral part of civil engineering profession. Engineering surveying is also known as land surveying that includes site investigation and selection with the usage of computerized measuring instruments which covers geographic or topographical information for identifying the best site location. He also turns out detailed or latest plans for the design of a project. As an civil engineer, an individual also establishes control or reference points on dams or bridges to record or monitor any future movements of the structure.
In short, civil engineering surveying works on various areas like turning out of maps and plans that are required for planning and designing of civil engineering structures. This field also includes monitoring construction for ensuring the accuracy of dimensions and tolerances.
