The Dirty Picture is based on the life of
the South Indian movie Silk Smitha.
It's about her love story with a director.
Silk Smitha became a movie extra and
subsequently the most wanted heroine of the early 80s. The sobriquet "Silk"
came in 1979, with her first Tamil film Vandi Chakkaram, in which she played
a bar girl named Silk. In a career spanning 17 years, she did over 450 films
in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. In 1996, Smitha
was found dead in her Chennai apartment. The previous year she had tried to
become a film producer. Financial problems, disillusionment in love and an
alcohol dependency apparently led to depression. It is suspected that Smitha
committed suicide.
The first leg of filming took place at Mumbai's Film City where an elaborate
set re-creating Chennai of the 80's, was set up. The second schedule was
shot in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. The song 'Ishq Sufiyana' was shot at
famous Golconda fort in old Hyderabad.
The Dirty Picture was the most anticipated film of 2011, and its first look
and a short teaser were launched online on 26 August 2011. The enthusiastic
response even prompted its producers to consider a sequel. The film's
trailer on Youtube got over 880,000 hits within a few days.
As a part of marketing for the promotion of the movie, Vidya Balan and
Emraan Hashmi made guest appearances on a special one-hour episode of Sony
TV's popular daily soap 'Bade Achhe Lagte Hain'. Balan also performed the
song, "Ooh La La" with Saakshi Tanwar, the lead actress of the soap
T-Series acquired the music rights for The Dirty Picture. Vishal-Shekhar
composed five tracks for the film and Rajat Aroraa penned the lyrics for
them.
Story:
Reshma ( Vidya Balan), a small town girl with dreams of stardom in her eyes,
sets out for Chennai, with nothing but her passion to stir her on. After the
usual period of struggle and rejections, she gets her break as an item girl
who's got the most sensuous moves in town. It doesn't take her long to storm the
box office as Reshma, the sex symbol who's driving a whole generation crazy with
her oomph. The industry too can't stay immune to her earthy charms and her list
of worshipers -- and lovers -- keeps multiplying, until it's downhill time. Will
simpleton Silk be able to survive the rigours of a heartless work place that
discards faster than it accepts?
