By CHITRADEEPA A. & LAVANYA M: The present
generation students have a plethora of career options and they must channelize
their efforts to make an excellent career choice that suits their talent and
aptitude, said Dr. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, vice chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR
Medical University.
Speaking at the inaugural of the seventh edition of The Hindu Education Plus
Career Fair , he pointed out that for those who wish to pursue a career in
medical and allied fields of study, the options are a plenty. The Hindu
Education Plus Career Fair was held at the Chennai Trade Centre . G.V. Sampath,
vice president of VIT, the principal sponsor for the event, wished the students
who had gathered in large number a glorious future. Hard work and relentless
practice is the mantra for success, he said.
The pre-counselling session was sponsored by P.B. College of Engineering. Dr.
Sudha Seshayyan, Registrar, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, provided an
excellent and comprehensive overview of medical counselling. “Be scrupulous in
choosing a self-financing medical college and check for accreditation and
Medical Council of India's approval,” she said. Certain allied health science
courses provide better opportunity and these courses are for shorter duration as
well.
If you find your way into the top ten engineering colleges, then do not bother
about the stream you opt for, said educational consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi.
According to him, Computer Science and IT, Electronics and Electrical
Engineering and Civil Engineering are the areas that will generate jobs in the
next few years. “Students must make a career choice by tracking the future trend
only and not going by trends in the past,” he said. There is a major boom in
energy sector as well around the world. In the immediate future, core industry
will prefer masters with specialisation. Therefore core engineering students
must pursue a masters in specialised and niche areas as that will enable them to
land excellent jobs.
Session on information technology threw light on the innumerable opportunities
available in the IT industry. Santanu Paul, CEO and Managing Director,
TalentSprint, said forty lakh new jobs are expected to be created in the sector,
which includes IT services, software product and hard ware product firms, and
consultancy firms. Opportunities in entrepreneurship in the industry too remains
to be explored, said K. Purushothaman, Regional Director, TN & Kerala, NASSCOM.
Speaking on core engineering streams, A.N. Brijesh Nair, Associate Professor,
VIT University, said one year prior graduation decide on your future plans -
whether you want an employment in public or private sector or pursue higher
education. Accordingly, begin your preparations. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean -
Planning and Development, SASTRA University, spoke on developments in
bio-technology.
The boom in media industry has opened up a sea of opportunities for students,
said experts at the session on off-beat options. Prominent professionals from
the field of journalism, film-making and advertising spent time detailing to
students the skill sets required to make a mark in these professions. “It will
be advisable for students with a basic degree, preferably in humaniites, to go
on and take up a specialised course in journalism,” said Sampath Kumar, faculty,
Asian College of Journalism.
On the legal profession, advocate Ananth Padmanabhan said students with general
interest towards happenings around and good communication skills could opt for a
career in law. The students were informed that a number of specialisations such
as music, aviation and radio law are also emerging as career choices.
A free psychometric test for students was sponsored by Bhodhi. VIT also
sponsored shuttle service from Guindy and Koyambedu to the venue and made it
very convenient for students to attend the event. Edserv, P.B. College of
Engineering, Apollo Engineering College and Alpha Group of Institutions were
seminar sponsors. Co-sponsors for the event were Bodhi, Roshan Bag Malls, Q
