'Don't fear cancer, fear delay in tackling it'

TENALI: Stating that cancer is curable if detected and treated early, world renowned cancer care expert V Shanta has suggested that one should not fear about the disease but fear about delay in tackling it.

Chairman and executive director of Chennai-based cancer institute ( Women's India Association), Shanta stressed the need for early detection and early treatment of the dreaded disease.

Delivering the 19th Dr Y Nayudamma Memorial Lecture here on Saturday after receiving the prestigious award, Shanta expatiated on the basic facts about the disease and described it as a traitor within. However, she said that a majority of common cancers were preventable.

Shanta said cancer could occur at any age and in any part of the body and no organ was exempt as well as age. She felt that it was only fortunate that it is neither contagious nor infectious.

She added that the recent trends in the treatment of cancer helped in reducing the fatality and that the multi-disciplinary approach in oncological care had enhanced survival in locally advanced oral and breast cancers. She also said the survival rate had reached a good 50 per cent from a dismal 19 per cent in respect of oral cancers and 60 per cent from 30 per cent in breast cancers.

The award winner listed seven danger signals of cancer everybody should take note of: a sore that does not heal; a lump or thickening in the breast or elsewhere; unusual bleeding or discharge; any change in a wart or mole; persistent indigestion or difficulty in swallowing; persistent hoarseness or cough; and any change in normal bowel habits. Keeping teeth and mouth clean; proper genital hygiene by treating any genital infection; and careful screening of high risk women, reduction in number of children and breast feeding of children were her other recommendations
