Family Chennai: There is nothing Lord Narayana likes more than the love of His devotees for Him. And He has proved it on many occasions, said Velukkudi Krishnan. At home, Lord Narayana is worshipped in the form of Saligrama. These Saligaramas have to be treated with great respect and faith. Water is poured over them before food offerings are made. Once there was a man of God who worshiped the Lord through his song and dance. Wherever he went, he took his Saligrama with him. The Saligrama he had was a small one. He kept it in his box of areca nuts; so small was the Saligrama that when out among the areca nuts, it looked like an areca nut itself! In a hurry, the man would often put the Saligrama into his mouth, thinking that it was an areca nut. A bite would show him that he had put the Saligrama into his mouth. He would then spit it out and wash it and proceed to worship it. One day, the Saligrama was lost, and a rich man found it. Since Saligramas are difficult to get, the rich man was happy that he had got one at last. So he worshipped it, after wrapping it in silk and putting it in a silver box. He offered the richest of foods to the Saligrama. But the Lord was not pleased. All He wanted was to get back to the man who used to put Him into his mouth! The Lord's argument was that the man recited the verses of the Azhvars every day. Such a man's saliva was itself purifying. So He wanted to get back to the man, because then there was the possibility that the man might put Him into his mouth. Thus even the tongue that recites the verses of the Azhvars becomes dear to Him, and is preferred to soft silk. The Lord valued the love of the Gopikas, because they expected nothing in return from Him. They had their existence only for Krishna. To them, life without Him was meaningless. We may have riches and may offer him gold in plenty, but none of that has any significance in the Lord's eyes compared with the love His devotees show Him. The Lord is not impressed with our show of wealth. ( Courtesy: The Hindu ) |
