Suppandi is a comic character in Tinkle
comics. Suppandi, a village simpleton, is still considered the most famous among
the characters appearing in Tinkle. Suppandi made his debut in January, 1983.
Suppandi was one of the first characters to have
appeared in Tinkle and has been a popular figure amongst children and adults
alike, for almost three decades. He is all about proactive thinking with a
natural talent to bungle everything.
Unlike other Tinkle characters, he was not originally conceptualized by the
creators of the magazine. He was born out of 3 narrative stories sent by Sameer
Salman from Trichy. The concept was rendered into comics format in Tinkle
studios, with the illustrations by one of the famous yesteryear artists, Ram
Waeerkar.
Ram Waeerkar carried on drawing for Suppandi till the early 2003, after which it
is now being taken care by Ram Waeerkar’s talented daughter, Archana Amberkar.
Even though stories of dimwits have always had a universal appeal, Suppandi fans
would not describe him as one. He is more of a simpleton who gets into troubles
because he insists on thinking for himself, than being dictated by the orders of
his master.
As an example, in the very first story, where his mistress wants him to call a
doctor as she has a fever, but instead of following orders as any other domestic
help would, he gets a brainwave and decides to treat her himself. The
consequences of course are, as expected, disastrous. But tales have also been
published which show him over obedient such as not switching on the scooter's
headlight at night to save electricity, thus reducing the electricity bill!
Some Suppandi tales: Once Suppandi's new master was a miser who had got a friend
visiting him, being a miser he had told Suppandi to give him only half of
whatever the guest asked for. Suppandi followed his instructions and everything
went alright till the guest asks him for the magazine in which the master's
article was published, eager to follow his masters instructions he gives him
only half the magazine!
Doctor: You have
206 bones in your body.
Suppandi: Don't tell loudly.
Doctor: Why?
Suppandi: My dog is just outside, if he hears then I am finished.
Master:why are you
spreading sugar under your pillow?
Suppandi: So that I may have sweet dreams, master.
Owing to the popularity of the character, the
quarterly magazine Suppandi 48 was launched by Amar Chitra Katha (ACK)
media in July 2010.
