IAS First Rank 2010: Divyadharshini The results of Civil Service exam 2010 declared. Chennai-based law graduate S Divyadharshini topped the list, followed by Computer Engineer Sweta Mohanty from Hyderabad. R V Varun Kumar, a Chennai-based dentist, got the third rank, and also emerged as the topper among male candidates. A total of 920 candidates made it to the final list of selected candidates from the 5,47,698 who appeared for the examination. The top 25 successful candidates include 20 men and five women. Of the 25, 15 are engineers, five have medical science background and the others belong commerce, management, humanities, science and social sciences streams. Eight of the 25 toppers made it to
the merit list in their first attempt, four in their second, nine in their
third, three in their fourth and one in the fifth shot at the examination.

is a law graduate. An exuberant Divyadharshini, who gave the exam the second
time this year, said that though she was expecting to qualify this time, the
idea of topping the civil services examination had never crossed her mind. “I
was expecting good result but not of being the topper,” she said.
She spends four to
five hours, five days a week preparing for the exam.
Her father V. Shanmugam is a customs consultant.
Shanmuggam said he was surprised
over her ranking. "Most of the time I found her watching cricket. I didn't
expect her to make it to the very top," he said. It is a first-of-a-kind
experience for Divyadharshini, who got 1% less than distinction in Class 10 in
Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School, Egmore and 86% in Class 12. In college,
she was among the top five. 2nd rank- Sweta Mohanty: She is the daughter of former Andhra Pradesh DGP A K Mohanty, this was the third attempt. Her father is IAS/IPS officer. Mohanty (27), BTech from a private engineering college in Hyderabad, had first cleared UPSC in 2007 and made it to the Indian Customs and Central Excise Service. Currently posted in Siliguri as assistant commissioner, central excise, Mohanty continued with her IAS coaching hoping to secure a better rank. While marriage, the birth of a child, a full-time job and three-year break before taking the exam again may have worked against any other candidate, for Mohanty all these added up to a success story. A mother of a one-and-a-half year old baby girl, Mohanty got married in 2008 to Rajat Saini, an IAS officer who is currently posted as additional district magistrate in Siliguri. "If my husband and my mother were not supportive enough I could not have got such a good rank. They helped a lot in taking care of the baby even as I did my routine studies," said Mohanty. 3rd Rank-R V Varun Kumar: R V Varun Kumar, who secured third rank, is a BDS degree-holder from Ragas Dental College, Chennai. Despite not being a cricket fan, Varun watched a documentary on Sachin Tendulkar before the examination. He learnt three important lessons: perseverance, discipline and sincerity.
