By A Staff Reporter - MUSCAT — A local Omani firm has announced the launch of
a new School Tracking System
designed to enable parents, teachers and guardians
to keep a close tab on little children. Dubbed the ‘MIP-ESSEN’ Safety System,
this school tracking device is based on the universally popular Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) solution, says Shiv Gupta, Operations Manager for Muscat
International Purchase (MIP) Oman, the company behind the introduction of this
revolution system in the Sultanate.
ESSEN RFID is well known for its customised RFID solutions for people-tracking.
Its use has been popularised in the oilfield sector given its success in
tracking people working in hazardous environments. Commenting on the genesis of
the MIP-Essen system, Gupta explains: “Small kids are too small to take care of
themselves. Although, the MIP Essen system is the result of two years of
continuous research and hard work, the tragic death of a little girl who got
left behind in a school bus prompted us to bring the product to market as
quickly as possible.
In order to secure the lives of innocent children against perils, we felt it
necessary to come up with a foolproof system.” According to Gupta, who has a
three-year-old school-going child, the system is based on the principles of RFID
and GPS. “There will be RFID enabled tags affixed to every school batch,
schoolbag or wrist of the child. As soon as they board or disembark from a
school bus, an alert goes out to the driver and school database.
In the event that the child is left on the bus or misses one’s stop, an
automatic alert will be received by the school, bus driver and parents
concerned.” These alerts can also be generated when the child enters and exits
the school, thereby assuring parents that their kids have reached or left school
safely and on time, says Gupta (Inset picture).
The system can also be programme to generate alerts that help manage the
whereabouts of children. Options include alerts linked to class attendance,
library use, and even the choice of foodstuff purchased at the school canteens.
With the aid of RFID tags, purchases can be carried out without the need for
paper currency, the Operations Manager pointed out.
