The Short Message Service (SMS) is
the ability to send and receive text messages to and from mobile telephones. Now
we can use computer also to send messages to any mobile phone around the World.
The text can comprise of words or numbers or an alphanumeric combination.
A single short message can be up to 160 characters
of text in length using default GSM ( Mobile Phone /Global system for Moble)
alphabet coding, 140 characters when Cyrillic
character set is used and 70 characters when UCS2
international character coding is used
GSM is able to store SMS messages
for deferred delivery. This means that if your hand phone is out of range or
turned off, your messages will be stored by your mobile phone operator and
delivered to your hand phone when it is in range or switched on again
In order to send SM from the
Internet, your Web browser should be able to display language specific
characters and allow entering text in the Message Text box. Currently only MS
Internet Explorer 5.0 and higher can properly encodes text in any languages.
Supporting of other browsers will be developed in future.
SMS provides the ability
to send and receive text messages to and from mobile telephones. This includes
sending and receiving SMS messages when travelling abroad, without the need to
arrange GSM roaming facilities.
SMS is a GSM service in
which you can send and receive data to and from another GSM handset. The
messages can be comprised of words or numbers or an alphanumeric combination.

- Sending and receiving personal messages exchanged between family
members and friends.
- “ Chatting” services. - Exchanging musical tones and photos. - Banking facilities such as transferring, balance and other services.
- Access to the latest information and about flights, sports, and weather. These services are free. You pay only normal GSM the call charges. More services can be received with low cost subscription fees.
