T.K. Devasia
: Students who cannot afford tuitions to fathom
their knowledge in any subject need not worry. The Amrita University will soon
be transmitting a free online tuition programme in all subjects, which the
students can access from the comforts of their home.
The
students, who have access to a computer with Internet connection, can avail the
facility from anywhere in the world by logging on to
www.onlinegurukul.in, the university’s award winning E-learning
platform called Amrita Virtual Interactive E-Learning World (A-VIEW).
Amrita E-Learning Research Lab director
Kamal Bijlani told Khaleej Times that the programme will be highly beneficial to
the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students pursuing Indian syllabus since they will
be able to learn from the best teachers available in the country.
The online
programme, supported by the Ministry of Human Resources Development’s (MHRD)
National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT)
initiative, has already been launched in Kerala. It will be extended to other
states later, he said.
Initially,
the programme covers career awareness. Bijalani said that the university had
decided to focus on career awareness first following a market survey in Kerala
found that students were highly interested in learning career opportunities in
their respective fields and enhancing their soft skills. The other subjects will
be added subsequently.
The free
online tuition programme is part of the new multi-modal multimedia e-learning
system developed by the University to address the growing shortage of qualified
teachers. The e-learning system called A-VIEW works over the network to bring
classroom teaching, live from teachers at reputed institutions to students at
numerous locations.
The
university has also developed virtual laboratories enabling students to do
laboratory experiments independent of students’ locations
