A canteen supplying herbal food products was opened on the
premises of Ripon Buildings, Chennai, India.
The facility is open to all and serves the usual ‘tiffin’ items
and more — but with a herbal touch.
On the opening day, the canteen witnessed a scramble for food
tokens in the morning and during lunch time. All items, from herbal idli to
sweets, are sold at a nominal rate. The herbal lunch which includes rice is
priced at Rs. 15.
The new herbal canteen with healthy and affordable food has been
attracting many customers ranging from government officials to local residents
over the past few days.
As the number of visitors to the herbal canteen has been on the
rise, the civic body proposes to make alternative arrangements to accommodate
the extra numbers.
Ripon Buildings is also planning to procure herbs from areas
such as Kollimalai to cope with the shortage of herbs in Chennai.
There are also plans to set up herbal parks in various parts of
the city.
The food sent to ministers on Monday included rice with
avarampoo sambar, vepampoo rasam, tulasi buttermilk, pirandai thuvayal and
herbal kootu. Many employees of the Secretariat visit the herbal canteen for
lunch, which costs Rs. 15.
Government employees from various departments have been found
waiting in the long queue for lunch. Many take the train from other parts of the
city to reach Ripon Buildings for lunch.
