Aviation medicine, also called flight medicine or aerospace medicine, is a preventive or occupational medicine in which the patients/subjects are pilots, aircrews, or persons involved in spaceflight. The specialty strives to treat or prevent conditions to which aircrews are particularly susceptible, applies medical knowledge to the human factors in aviation and is thus a critical component of aviation safety.A military practitioner of aviation medicine may be called a flight surgeon and a civilian practitioner is an aviation medical examiner. The Post-Graduation programme in Aviation Medicine is conducted by the Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) (www.isam-india.com) and is nomenclatured as MD (Aviation Medicine) which is of three-year duration. The IAM is a premier institute under the Indian Air Force which is recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. Those who possess a MBBS degree from a recognised University (MCI recognised) and registered with the State Medical Council are eligible to apply for the programme. The candidates should have secured a minimum of 55 per cent in MBBS to be eligible for admission. SC and ST candidates should have secured a minimum of 50 per cent in MBBS (final) to be eligible.
