Today, culinary art is one of
the most sought-after career options in the country.A chef is a culinary
professional whose primary responsibility is to cook and present exotic
dishes. As a chef, you will have to create a wide variety of foods like
appetisers, snacks, salads, main dishes and desserts. Eventually, you will
create your own recipes

Educational qualifications
Until recently, those aspiring to become a chef would take up a course in hotel
management. This course is meant to impart skills required to produce food and
perform the managerial and administrative tasks of the hospitality industry.
Eventually, degree and diploma courses dedicated to catering technology and
culinary arts developed. Today, the trend of pursuing these courses picked up
well. Those aspiring to become chefs pursue these courses as they centre on

To begin your career as a chef, you need to undergo high level of training. The
Bachelor's degree programmes cater to this requirement providing exposure to all
aspects of food preparation. The curriculum is a careful mix of classroom
sessions, practical training, guest lectures and industry internships. During
the course, you will learn about a variety of cuisines, menus, food storage,
kitchen equipment, knife techniques, nutrition, inventory and purchasing, and
service etiquette. However, much of a chef's learning is through internship and
on-the-job training. Despite completing a four year course, you might spend time
cleaning and peeling potatoes in the first year of your career!
Career prospects
After completing the course, you can seek jobs in restaurants, dining
establishments, hotels, banquets, coffee shops, bakeries, caterers, airlines,
cruise lines, hospitals, armed forces and educational institutions. Some of the
top recruiters include ITC Hotels, The Taj Group, Oberoi, The Imperial,
Marriott, The Leela, The Park, Lemon Tree
Hotels and Four Seasons.
Based on your skills and experience, your starting salary could be between Rs.
15,000 to Rs. 30, 000.
After you gain some work experience, you can choose to work as a freelancer or
as a consultant to restaurateurs. You can also start your own food service
establishment.
The job of a chef involves a great deal of pressure and demands good
physical and mental stamina. As a chef, you
are expected to work for long hours, multi task, meet short deadlines, minimise
wastage and still deliver the best dishes consistently.
